2013 – 2014 (School Trilogy)

2 Cool 4 Skool

2 Cool 4 Skool marks the debut date for BTS and the beginning of their school trilogy. This series’ concept makes sense because at the time the majority of the members were teenagers and some of them were still at attending to school.

Through their title track, No More Dream, BTS send very controversial and political messages. Reading the lyrics to this song, the audience can understand that what they are saying is that today’s youth has lost their hopes to live better because their parents and other grown-ups have forced them to accomplish specific goals, to work well at school, to have good grades, but not to dream.

This song addresses a common topic in South Korea, where kids and teenagers usually attend after school classes so they can attend prestigious universities.

Throw a fast ball on the after school studying
Disobey the hell like society pardon the dream
Ask yourself ’bout the profile of your dream
Become the subject of your own life, away from suppression.

Their second album, O!RUL8,2?, follows with the last album’s concept and the already mentioned topic related to youth and the educational system.

This time, N.O. (No Offense,) their title track, gets deeper about the struggles students face at such a young face, and refers to their lives as being controlled, just like puppets. This reference is very visible in their music video, where they rebel against the authorities controlling them.

However, they did not lose their rebellious side. Some B-side tracks, such as Tomorrow and Spine Breaker, hide some important messages to young people. The first addresses the struggles and difficulties teenagers face before adulthood. The second one talks about Spine Breakers, which are those children and teenagers who keep asking their parents to buy them more things and never stop without appreciating their parents’ hard work. As a result, the parents have spines bent due to all the work.

HYYH Era (2015-2016)

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1

With the release of The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt.1, also known as 화양연화 pt.1 (Hwayangyeonhwa pt.1) or HYYH, a new concept of BTS was revealed and a new era began. This album changed people’s perspective about BTS. From this moment, BTS gain more respect and this album gain them their first win in the weekly Korean musical show The Show.

The album contains nine tracks, with I Need U as the lead single and Dope (쩔어) as a promoted follow-up single.

They charted a total of six songs on the Billboard World Digital Songs Chart, with Need U ranked highest at number four, while Dope got the 11 place, followed by Hold Me Tight (number 12), Boyz with Fun (number 13), Converse High (number 15), and Outro: Love is Not Over (number 25.)

Despite their great visual change, their beliefs and ideas remain the same. With Dope, they keep calling out adults for demeaning the younger generations and this time, they have also pointed out the role of the media in this issue. RM, the group’s leader, claims this, by hiding in his rap a popular expression that references what people have to give up in the face of economic difficulties and societal ills.

The media and adults say we have no willpower and
look at us as if we’re investments

The same day the album came out, the music video of Run was uploaded in YouTube and told the story started in the previous video, I Need U, showing both joyful and enduring moments of the youth, where young people have to discover and understand who they are, while facing the difficult life situations of growing up.

This time, the song that transmit a political and controversial message is Silver Spoon (Baepsae/Crow Tit), addressing the socioeconomic status. It is of common use in South Korea the metaphor “spoon” to refer to someone’s socioeconomic status, where the gold and silver spoons are at the top of the hierarchy while the dirty and rusty spoons are at the base of the pyramid and it is difficult for them to climb to the top. Throughout the song, BTS embrace who they are and encourage others in their low class to fight against those in power to achieve success.

  1. This article really kept me glued. I was so intrigued that I wanted to know more about them although it is my first time hearing or reading about them but they look cool and from what I read, are very great in their music and performance. I think I will download their music and get to listen to them

    1. Hello Linus,

Thank you for your comment and I’m so happy that you enjoyed reading this article. If you are interested to know more about them, they will be releasing a new album in less than two weeks called Map of the Soul: Persona. I have written another post about it, and you can check it here

  2. Hi Mariana, that was a great review. I haven’t heard of BTS before, but you have aptly written pretty much that will make someone new to BTS to know virtually what the group has been upto and what they have achieved so far.

Reading about the School Trilogy, O!Rul8,2, School luv Affair etc, I must say that I love the first, ie the School Trilogy. The lyrics are great and when you fully understand the message, you will know that it is important to dream dreams. Oftentimes kids/youths are forced into actualizing one goal or the other, without allowing them to make a choice of their own, a choice of who they truly want to become.

    Your article is great.

  3. BTS has always been one of those groups I could turn to when I felt like I need a pick me up. Their music is always interesting and fun to listen to. I like their nearly works the best but even their later songs are catchy and easy to love. Thanks for putting this discography together.

    1. Hello Eric,

thank you for your comment. Most people listened to their more recent albums, so I thought it was important to share about their early years and that they have always been spreading meaningful messages to their listeners.

  4. Kudos to you for sharing this article on BTS discography. It is really nice getting to know about this singers. I love their first àlbum titled no dream as their lyrics actually spoken the minds of many young teenagers that were forced to go to school just to have the grades and thereby abandoning their dreams. All their albums released had a message to pass to the society and I cherish their talents and their determination not to give up in their music carrier despite all odds. I will be anticipating for the release of their second part. The songs are lovely and inspiring. Thanks for sharing this.

    1. Hello,

Thank you for the reply and I am already preparing the second part of this article, so please wait for it.

  5. Hi! Thank you for this overview about BTS. I have been hearing a bit about them here and there and they are world famous, but I hadn’t had the occasion of reading a recount as this one concerning their musical career.

It’s impressive how this Korean group has taken over the world. But taking a closer look at them they have interesting points. And one of them is their lyrics. They go against what Koreans previous generation hold as the way things should be. And that has clicked with teenagers.

    1. Hello Henry,

Yes, they do go against what their society tells them to do, and now that they have a greater impact on the world, they want to use their voices to spread positivity, love and what they think it’s right. about:blank#blocked

People sometimes can’t understand why BTS are so famous, but I think it’s probably because of their meaningful songs, besides that they are very sincere and genuine.

  6. Thanks for writing out this lovely article and I must say its a must for everyone to read and digest.Tjis is an insightful review on how student suffers and how there parent mislead them into wrong area of studies. Children above age 12 should be given right to make a decision for themselves. I would love to have some of this music on my playlist.most times, music is an expression of the heart felt. Thanks for the review

  7. Wow, great way to deal with emotions of being a younger generation which has to grow up in the world that previous generations has left for them. I know it is different in all parts of the world, but at the same time it is the same. The older generation leaves the mess to the younger generations to clean up. It is a vicious cycle.

And, its also sad that most societies spends their life time just in pursuit of money. Yes, it is a necessity at the same time it is not life. Not a lot of people actually experience true life because they are too busy in whatever rat race is going on in their part of the world.

You are doing a good service getting the information out there in a location that has been repressed from the rest of the world. It is good the world to see what is going on in other countries. I hope some day they will have peace there. Be blessed.

    1. Hello Sara,
I completely agree with you. I think there are more important things in life to achieve than just money.
Thank you so much for your comment,

  8. I’ve seen BTS perform on a show I watch… I thought they were good when I watched them.
Although I never looked into their history until I came across your post.

    1. Hi Christina,

Thank you for your insightful comment and I’m very happy that now you know more about their story and the meaning behind their songs. As I like to say, many people get curious about them because of their performances, but they stan them probably mainly because of their songs’ meanings.

  10. I am extremely out dated in this department of the world. I am really young but have not heard secular music or seen recent movies in years.Ever since I got closer to God, my life has changed for the better and I have distanced myself from all this material; not that its a bad thing either.I’m just seeing how out dated I am.

This article was really helpful for me to understand more about who they are and the meaning behind their songs. I will look forward to your next articles!
