The story behind it
It is not rare that BTS usually are inspired by literature and novels to make new music and this new album is no exception. Jung’s Map of the Soul is a book written by Murray Stein, which offers readers a strong grounding in the basic principles of Carl Jung’s analytical psychology in addition to illuminating insights. To understand better, Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who founded analytical psychology.
Just by knowing this, ARMYS over the world have been theorizing about the topic of this new album after the Love Yourself era. The most popular theory is that these songs will probably be still be related to loving oneself, but it will show us how to do so. Jung emphasized that the totality of the human mind and the personal quest to be true to one’s own personality.
According to Jung, there are four archetypes that makes :
- The self
To simplify, Persona could be considered the mask, the part we show to the outer world, Anima/Animus is the mirror, Shadow is described as the dark side, the parts we usually repressed. Finally, the self would represent ”
unified psyche as a whole.”
If you want to learn more about this, I would recommend you to read this article.
However, this is not the first time Jung was mentioned in the Bangtan Universe (the alternative universe where most BTS music videos take place and are correlated.)
During Wings era, Demian by Herman Hesse is the main concept for their album. ARMYS found out that Hesse was heavily influenced by Jung’s thoughts and theory.
Another book that may have a correlation to BTS’ new album is The Art of Loving, by psychoanalyst and social philosopher Erich Fromm.
Fromm presents love as a skill that can be taught and developed, rejecting the idea of loving as something magical and mysterious that cannot be analyzed and explained.
If you are interested in having a better understanding of BTS’ songs, I would highly recommend you read these books, they are really worth the while.
It is not just because of BTS, but also they have very meaningful messages and would help understand others and yourself better.
When will it be released?
BigHit confirmed that the new album will be released on Friday, April 12. A day later, BTS will have their comeback on the US American late-night live television variety show Saturday Night Live, where Emma Stone will be the host for the show that day.
In case you don’t know about Saturday Night Live is a show where many famous people perform comedy sketches, which often parody contemporary culture and politics.
Each episode is hosted by a celebrity guest, who usually delivers the opening monologue and performs in sketches with the cast as with featured performances by a musical guest.
So, in other words, this a very important moment for BTS’ career and performing in this show would allow them to be known by a greater audience in the US.
(Update 04.10.2019) SNL shared a teaser for this weekend’s performance. Watch it below:
Comeback Trailer – Going back to the past
On March Thursday 28 at 12 am (KST), Big Hit released the Comeback Trailer for BTS’ new album. In this video, RM (Kim NamJoon), the leader of BTS, is the only one featuring and the song would probably be the intro for Map of the Soul: Persona. If you haven’t seen the video yet, you can watch it here.
Looking thoroughly through the video, ARMYS found very interesting details about what to expect about this new era. It has been said that Persona will be the first of a trilogy, followed by Shadow and Ego, which can be seen written in the chalkboard at the background.
The first thing fans noticed about this video was that the beginning resembles the Skool Luv Affair comeback trailer, which makes fans think that they are going back to the beginning.
Other details ARMYS know about are that there are going to be four versions of this album and the photo that was attached with the pre-order notice. The image shows the four versions with different shades of pink. By knowing this, many think that the color of this album cover will be pink.
Another thing to take into account is that you can also buy a poster with the album and there will be a photo card as in most of BTS’ albums.
Each version of the album (1, 2, 3 and 4) will have seven different versions of the photo card, which makes a total of 28 photo cards.
So, in case you got lost, the album will include:
- a photobook (each version has a different booklet inside)
- A mini book (The most beautiful moment in life The Notes)
- 1 postcard
- 1 photo card
- 1 clear picket photo (limited quantity, only for first-time purchases)
- Photo film
- 1 poster for first-time purchase of each version
(Update 03.31.2019) Today Big Hit surprised all ARMYS and share the concept photos in their social media accounts for the version 1 and 2 of the album. In case you didn’t know, BTS’ album always are accompanied by a set of pictures of the members, and each version has a different concept.
In both these versions we can see the members relaxed, without many extravagant clothes, as we saw in the last album Love Yourself: Answer, but more casual style.
(Update 04.02.2019) Two days after the first two concept photos were revealed, BigHit shared the other two concept photos left.
In these new pictures, we can see the members holding a flower in their individual photos and in concept 4 pictures, they are holding grapes, except for Jin and HoSeok, who have a strawberry in their hands.
After all the concepts for this album were released, fans started to notice that these 4 concepts relate to the archetypes Jung explains in his theory, the persona, the anima, the self and the shadow.
Boy with Luv – Another journey to the past
(Update 04.07.2019) As it’s already Monday in South Korea, Big Hit revealed a Music Video teaser that took all fans by surprise.
ARMYS have expected that the tracklist would be released this Monday, and the release of the teaser is not the only thing that surprised fans, but also the collaboration with Halsey, who features in the MV.
This short teaser of BTS new song 작은 것들을 위한 시 (Boy With Luv) [A Poem for Small Things] has also a resemblance with another BTS song.
After watching the teaser, many fans have noticed the similarities with BTS previous song Boy in Luv, which was released in 2014 as the main track of Skool Luv Affair album.
However, fans are being skeptical about it and aren’t sure if the video will be part of the music video. If aren’t familiar with what happened before, last year before the release of Fake Love Music Video, there was a teaser revealed, but most of it wasn’t included in the MV.
With less than a week left. fans over the world cannot wait to see what will come out from this great collaboration.
(Update 04.10.2019) Three days after we got to see the first glipse of the Music Video, a new teaser was revealed. This time, we can appreciate a small part of their new choreography. Fans can’t wait for Friday to come and the week is passing by so slowly for ARMYs.

The tracklist – is there a meaning behind it?
(Update 04.08.2019) Today, at 12 am (KST), it was already Tuestday 9th in Korea and new information about the album was revealed: the tracklist.
ARMYs had been expected for the tracklist and were surprised when the teaser was released first. But now, after two days since the video was uploaded, fans can know more about what the songs will the album have.
The album will consist of 7 tracks, with 작은 것들을 위한 시 (Boy with Luv) as their title track. At first glance, the songs have very intriguing names and fans have already been theorizing about the meaning behind each song.
Starting with Persona, which we have already listened to and ending with Dionysus, fans are doing research about these words, their meanings and what the song could be about.
Some are even saying that some songs will be sub-units, meaning that two or three members will be singing the song instead of the whole group.
The songs can also be related with the HyyH storyline, which started in 2015 with The Most Beautiful Moment in Life pt. 1.
But something that people can be sure of it’s that these songs will have a very deep and meaningful message and they will probably lead the charts next week.
